Merkley: my Merkley Ancestry Story begins in Germany with Felix Merckel. Frederick Markel, my 7th Great Grandfather immigrated and settled in Ulster County, New York; my 6th Great Grandfather, Wilhelmus was born and remained there. His son, my 5th Great Grandfather, Frederick Markle, ended up in Canada after the Revolutionary War. His son, my 4th Great Grandfather, Michael Markley, married and raised his family in Canada, later in life, he moved to what was now the United States of America and settled in Iowa. His son, William, my 3rd Great Grandfather, remained in Canada; but his grandson, Edgar Merkley, my 2nd Great Grandfather, moved to Sac County, Iowa and all his children were born there, including Stella Merkley, my Great Grandmother. *Note: end of this document, special twists in my ancestry lineage.

Inscription:
Know O Traveler, within site of this hill on October 6, 1710, led by the Rev. Joshua Kochertal and the Rev. Johann Frederick Hager, there arrived on the east and west shores of Hudson's River nearly 300 families of refugees of the Palatine Region in Europe, who suffered many sorrows in the ravages of war, sickness, poverty and destitution, yet survived to settle these shores, sustained by their faith in the Lord and the sympathy of Queen Anne of England, whom they came to serve in the reduction of the pine forest for naval stores for her Majesty's Fleet. Edgar and Matilda Merkley, family portrait: Merle, Isaac, Stella, Loren
Edgar and Matilda Merkley, Grand Home
Merkley:
Stella's brother, Loren, married Linda Clara Zach, mother of my Grandmother, Hester Marie Zach; later, adopted by Loren becoming Hester Merkley, resulting in Loren being my Great Grandfather through marriage. My grandmother, Hester, was only three years old when Loren married her mother, she didn't learn that he wasn't her 'Father' until she was in grade school when a child called her a 'bastard'... she came home crying to her mother who said it was true but that was all she would ever say on the matter. My grandmother never knew who her biological father was; all she ever got was interesting 'stories' from relatives in Indiana where her mother was born and raised. They claimed to know who the family was and that 'Hes' was a spitting image of her 'aunts'. Story goes that Linda Zach was a live-in maid for a wealthy family, became pregnant by the son, the sisters found out and offered her a check for $15,000. to leave town; Linda tore up the check, threw it in their face, and left without ever telling her lover about her pregnancy. I will add this story as an 'attachment document' to Linda Zach-Merkley's biographical sketch, later.
There another interesting twist to our family lineage:
Fast-forward... my great grandmother, Stella Merkley-Adams, had a son, Myron Adams, Myron married my grandmother, Hester Zach-Merkley. Through marriage to my great grandmother, Loren Merkley is my great grandfather; when my grandmother, Hester, married Myron (Loren's nephew), the result was that Loren became by 'blood relative' grand uncle. The marriage of his nephew to his adopted daughter resulted in the birth of my mother. his granddaughter through marriage and his 'blood related' grand niece. Of course, she was always his granddaughter; and he was always my great grandfather... however, even the Ancestry.com Family Tree builder had trouble with this twist and Loren ended up two people in two locations...
