Descendants of Nimrod Adams
Generation No. 1
1. NIMROD 2 ADAMS (Parents, UNKNOWN 1) was born Abt. 1774, and died May 21, 1824 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
He married NANCY ETCHISON Abt. 1793 in Rowan County, North Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM ETCHISON. *Personal Note: William Etchison as father of Nancy Etchison, unverified.
She was born Abt. 1775 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1850 in Rush County, Indiana.
Notes for NIMROD ADAMS:
Totally unsure of his parentage, Nimrod could have descended from Benjamin, John, or other North Carolina Adam's. Benjamin Adams reportedly moved to Floyd, now Letcher County, Kentucky in 1803. It is said he had several sons. Rowan County deeds showed that Daniel, Isaac, and Benjamin Adams, each owned land in Bryan's Mill Creek area in 1801.
A John ADAMS is listed also in the 1759 ROWAN COUNTY TAX LIST
The Yadkin River - boundary for county on north and east sides. Origin is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Blowing Rock. River crosses North Carolina, becomes known as the Pee Dee River in South Carolina, and ends in the Atlantic Ocean.
Descendants of Nimrod and Nancy in Indiana saved several family letters written in the 1830’s, which identified some of the children and the established locations and movements of the family for several years.
[Nimrod Adams] may have been a trader who traveled parts of North Carolina.
[His] death was published in the Western Carolinian, newspaper of the area of Forks of the Yadkin, Rowan County, North Carolina in the June 8, 1824 issue.
From "The Descendents of Nimrod and Nancy (Etchison) Adams 1790-1978" by Geraldine Adams Hampton:
The first record of Nimrod Adams in Rowan County, North Carolina was in 1809 when he appeared on a tax list and lived in the area of Samuel Bryan's Mill Creek near other Adams's by the names of Abraham, Isaac, Daniel, Jacob and Elijah. The 1810 Federal Census of Rowan County showed 6 children while the 1820 Federal Census listed 8 children in Nimrod's family.
One Adams descendant indicated that Nimrod Adams was a trader who traveled to many points west of North Carolina. Nimrods absence in the 1800 Federal Census, and the lack of land ownership, may verify this family story.
Lineage of Nimrod Adams b 1775 or earlier is not known. Many related Adams families of Rowan County lived at times in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
One descendant believed that Daniel Adams was the father of Nimrod. One Daniel Adams d 1803 in Rowan County, and the only children mentioned in his estate papers were George Adams and Francis Adams Welch. Nimrod could be descended from Benjamin, John, or other North Carolina Adams's. Benjamin Adams reportedly moved to Floyd, now Letcher County, Kentucky in 1803. It was said that Benjamin had several sons. Rowan County deeds showed that Daniel, Isaac, and Benjamin Adams, each owned land in Bryan's Mill Creek area in 1801.
Descendants of Nimrod and Nancy in Indiana saved family letters written in the 1830s, which identified some of the children and established locations and movements of the family for a few years.
Nancy (Etchison) Adams and some of her children went to Indiana in 1826. They traveled by ox team through the Cumberland Gap. One of Nancy's children dropped from the caravan somewhere in Kentucky. The family was first in Davies County, then at Mt Pleasant in Perry County, Indiana.
Nancy and four of her sons were early landowners of Rush County, Indiana. Some of Nancy's land was on the Rush-Shelby County line. John Adams bought Rush County land in 1831; Jesse Adams bought land in 1833; and Nancy (Etchison) Adams bought Rush County land in 1834. Nancy Adams was in the 1840 Federal Census of Rush County, Indiana and was between the ages of 60 and 70.
The names of Nancy J Etchison and her husband Nimrod Adams were located on the death certificate of their son Jesse Adams who died 31 July 1890 in Rush County, Indiana.
Notes for NANCY ETCHISON: this information is duplicated
Isaac Adams is also listed in the Rush County 1840 Census in Jackson Township, along with most of the children of Nimrod and Nancy, which leads me to believe that Isaac was a cousin to Nimrods and Nancy’s children, having been also the same age as them.
It is believed she is buried in the Stanley Cemetery in Posey Township, Rush County, (near Arlington) Indiana where several family members where interred at one time. Years later, some family members transferred their burial places to the East Hill Cemetery, also near Arlington.

IncludingAtchison - Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, - and records of Archison, Atchison, Autcherson, Etcherson, Etchison, Etchinson, Eytchinson Kin throughout America. By June B. Barekman and Maxine Brown. Published by June B. Barekman.
"Mesdames Barekman and Brown have packed into this work a wealth of information on the descendants of Edmond Etchison and other Etchison families in America. In spite of all their efforts and the researches of others no information has been gleaned concerning the parentage and more remote ancestry of Edmond, who was born in Charles County, Maryland Abt. 1757, removed to Rowan County, North Carolina when 25 years old. Served in the Revolutionary Way in the North Carolina Militia, and died in Davis County before Feb. 1846.By his wife Edith Richardson, whose family is unknown, he had about 10 children. Other families treated are of William Etchison, and his wife Judy Taylor, Jesse Etchison and Nancy Felton (Hinton) Nancy Etchison and her husband Nimrod Adams, all of Rowan County, North Carolina. Much documentary evidence is introduced to support the early generations of these families."

1840 Rush County Census in POSEY TWP Moscow, the only town in Orange Township, is located in Section 18, and on the west of Big Flat Rock River. In 1822, soon after the Indian title to the land had been extinguished, John Wood and David Querry built a water mill on Flat Rock River. This was one of the most important early mills in all the new purchase, and was patronized by the settlers of all the adjacent counties. This was the first enterprise of the town. The same mill although several times remodeled, and now with a sawmill attached is owned and operated by A. V. Barlow. John Woods was the proprietor of the town and at his instance it was surveyed, and laid off into sixteen lots, by William B. Laughlin, in 1832. About 1822, Johnny Wood in connection with David Querry, built a mill on Flat Rock, and by means of waterpower operated it for several years. That mill, though remodeled is now owned and operated by A. V. Barlow. It is now a combined grist and sawmill. Soon after the building of the mill by Wood, Nathan Julian operated a store at the present site of Moscow, thus becoming the first merchant of the town. Julian was followed by Erastus Poter, Poter by A. Muscleman, Muscleman by John T. Drummond, Drummond, by O’Brien Gwynne, who was followed by many others. Present businessmen are: Thomas H. Carter, general merchandise, and John W. Barlow, drugs and groceries. Carter began business in 1885, and Barlow 1881. The population is about 150. Gings, Star Post office, is a small village on the line of J., M. & I. Railroad about seven miles from Rushville. Michael Ging was the original proprietor. The town was surveyed and platted by R. R. Spencer, September 26, 1870. Those who haHistoryve done business here were Michael Ging, first merchant, followed by John M. Francis, A. P. Pelers and Pelers & Newkirk. The business at present is conducted by J. M. Bell, Henry Rheuman, Theodore Schonert, S. C. Wicoff and Michael Hittle. Source: History Of Rush County Indiana Brant & Fuller 1888

Notes for STEPHEN BEACHAM ADAMS: 1856 bought land 2 1/14 miles west of Lewisville, Franklin Township, Henry County, Indiana. Lived there in 1874 Democrat. Religion: Baptist Occupation: Farmer Source: 1874 Henry County, Indiana Directory. Purchased the Adams Family Bible (new) on August 8th, 1838 for the amount of $6.00. The inscription in his handwriting says "This information is for all the generations who will be here after we all are Gone" Much of my information on his own immediate line came from this Bible. My great grandmother Argolda updated much of the information, and deaths, births and marriages, but the Bible has long been to frail to handle. In 2001 this Bible is 163 years old, and remains in my family today. Unfortunately, the Bible makes no reference to his parents, Nimrod and Nancy, just on his immediate family including his brothers and sisters. Some of the information I have seen posted has some of the dates different, and misspelling of some of the names, his family in this file is listed exactly the way he entered it into the Bible.

Several Adams family members where relocated from the Stanley Cemetery after it fell into disrepair, so this may be the same child that is listed in the Stanley Cemetery records.
