Personal Note: Best Source for Lineage Charts I’ve found; she uses reference #’s for SOURCE of information
*1/7/2020. This, rootsweb link, no longer opens to Kristen's Page. Evidently rootsweb has changed their primary "Pedigree Chart" for Friedrich Merckel to one that is owned (authored by) someone else; unfortunately, his lineage breaks off from mine at Michael Frederick and he lists him with a different spouse than I have. I have not been able to find Kirsten's "Pedigree Chart" that I used to build my Merkley Family Tree. However, since I have records validating Michael Frederick married Nancy Casselman and their children, and, records validating his parents: Frederick Markle and Rebecca Catherine Pickard, I am satisfied that the information I have used is accurate for my family lineage. The entries below were directly from Kirsten's Page.

the father/son relationship between Felix and Friederich Merckel is highly speculative and is supported solely by the fact that Ellsabetha (Merckel) Würth, daughter of Felix Merckel, was sponsor at the baptism of Friederich's daughter Elisabetha in 1704.

Surname History
Traditional genealogical research indicates a German origin for the surname, with the most common early spellings being MERCKEL or MERKLE.  The families begin to appear in North America with the Palatine immigration of 1710 and by the early 1800s concentrations of the name, with many spelling variations, are found in New York, Pennsylvania, the Southern US, Michigan, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada, including a large group among the Six Nations (Haudenosaunee) of Ontario.

Markle Family Groups
These Markle family clusters have been identified, with several traced to the immigrant ancestor. To be included in the results, please add your pedigree to the Markle DNA Forum here. If you know the name of the group that you belong to from the list below, please place the name of this group next to your family patriarch. Otherwise, you will be placed (over time) with others with matching DNA or into new family lines. Additions and corrections are always welcome.

Ulster County, New York, stemming from 1710 Palatine immigrant Friederich Merckel with early descendants in New York, the southern United States, and Ontario, Canada.

Merckel Family Migration and Name History (Source: Merckel Family on Ancestry)
The name was originally spelled Merkel or Merckel and pronounced in German as “Mare-kil”. The Palatines settled among, and intermarried with, the Dutch in Ulster County, New York. Here they soon were using the prevailing language which was Holland Dutch. (At Kingston church preaching was in Dutch until 1809).

They taught their children German and used the language in churches for nearly 100 years. Many Palatines married only within the German community until the 19th century.

Germantown Lutheran History
Excerpts, a contemporary observer (along with a fantastical sketch of the tent community) of the Palatines… Note (Jody Gray): some of this I’d read in other Palatine stories… new to me: “Some employ themselves by making several toys of small value, which they sell to the multitudes that come daily to see them.” The observer describes the ‘customs’ that the people of England found interesting.
Around this same time (1812), under the lead of Pastor Quitman, the congregation began its transition from the use of German in worship, to the use of English. This transition was not complete until the middle of the 19th century. The last known use of German in a worship service was in 1853, when church records report that the Lord’s Supper was administered in German to several aged members of the congregation...

Questions: about descendants of Friederich Merckel
(children born in Germany) -ARRIVAL in New York
Miner Descendants
According to the Hunter Lists, Friederich had four children when he reached West Camp although there are baptismal records in Haßloch church books for others.  Obviously several died young and never reached New York.  I believe the four who survived were Lorentz, Anna (Antje), Anna Maria, and Johann Matthias.  They most closely match the ages and sexes as given in the Hunter Lists, and there are later records for marriages of these four in the Kingston church books.
